Revealing and respecting the historic significance of this grade II* gardens, our masterplan creates a new kind of ‘Landscape of Power’. Sculptural landform will enable large and small events as well as providing a beautiful, accessible landscape for picnics and games. Sensitive interventions turn this private garden into a publicly accessible one - reflecting the past and designed for the future. 

Wentworth is the biggest private mansion in the UK, built by Yorkshire’s coal barons with its landscape re-modelled by Repton. SPLA have now designed the landscape for public use, following the Trust’s acquisition 2017. The terraced and ramped landform will replace the site of 1940’s open cast mining over a former Reptonian garden. Our landscape restoration takes the visitor on a journey through the story of Power and Flowers. Not to romanticise the past but telling the story of the land and its people, from Repton to coal mining and beyond – The design tells a story of the landscape’s transformation from nature to design, extraction and finally beauty, with a new chapter healing the scars of the past in a landscape of power and change.
