Re-uniting the disparate parts of this park was key to this project’s success. The historic burial ground had long been divorced from the memorial gardens, meaning the park had become better known for ASB rather than a place of enjoyment or remembrance. As a result it was underused by most. 

Romford’s war memorial central to the gardens remained the Borough’s main focus, but new memorials  and other items had been added piecemeal meaning the integrity of the space, was lost. 

Working closely with the various organisations, the DAC, council and community we agreed the design and rationalised the layout collectively prior to planning. We designed a coordinated paving plan to use a quantity of high quality dimensioned and sawn yorkstone that the client had in storage, fitting various sizes and quantities to accommodate the memorials respectfully.

Our design allows the space to function as a community garden and informal play space, as well as a respectful square for annual remembrance services. Our plan recognises the garden’s historic significance; a 1950s design layer and historic burial ground, previously hidden behind overgrown conifers. By re-uniting both spaces we’ve highlighted their significance, and created a joyful landscape for all to use. 

The park now works in a number of ways:

• A space for reflection and remembrance

• A relaxing space, but with areas for informal activity

• A joyful, sunny space with areas of shade

• A garden with colourful but low maintenance planting

• An accessible, safe and open garden for all
