Alongside the re-design of this £300k riverside gardens in Southwark, was the creation and installation of a fish mosaic, working with local schools.  

In conjunction with a mudlarker and ceramicist, SPLA devised a series of school workshops starting with mudlarking, clay workshops imprinting the finds from the Thames. The ceramicists then translated the pieces into the final fish mosaic and we integrated it into the site’s overall design. We facilitated a ‘meet the contractors’, for the schools so the kids could see the landscape works, ask questions and learn about the design process and complexities of delivering a landscape construction project. 

The siting and integration of the mosaic to ensure its longevity enable maintenance was key. The gardens are now a fully accessible series of small scale paths, seats, ramps to the Riverside Walkway and planting, designed as a playable landscape. The revitalised riverside walkway now incorporates new suds beds, pollinator planting and seating to allow more people to rest, pause and enjoy the view.
